Úvod

OutKast

Od debutu v roce 1993 s pomalým, uvnitř sametovým singlem ”Player’s Ball”, se OutKast řídí George Clintnovou Parliament – Funkadelic Seventies funkovou mytologií. Jenže tak trošku jinak, než jejich kolegové z branže jako třeba Dr. Dre, pro které je Clinton (inspirativně) čistě jen o zvuku. OutKast následuje i myšlenku P-Funk pravidel. Na albu ATLines se sami vyobrazili jako komičtí mimozemšťané; široko záběrové album Aquemini z roku 1998, s čelním rapovým hitem ”Rosa Parks” je jedním z nejlepších rapových alb devadesátých let. Učinilo OutKast mainstreamem, nejprogresivnější hiphopovou grupou. Duo se obrací ke Clintonově známé formulce : They had freed their asses, and their minds followed. (překládat to nebudu)

Směsice Southern (jižního) soulu, plynulého rapu a stylu G-funk (G= Gangsta) produkční skupiny Organized Noize je typickým příkladem vzrůstající síly hiphopového atlantského křídla, zvného the Dirty South, během 90. let. Současně s Goodie Mobem ("Good Die Mostly Over Bulls--t") , pojal Outkast Southern (jižní) hiphop ve smělých, inovativních směrech : méně důrazu na násilí, více positivity a melodie, promyšlenější úprava a komplikovanější texty. Poté, co Dre (nikoliv Dr. Dre, ten je o deset let starší) a Big boi prorazili na přední příčky rapových hitparád s jejich prvním singlem ”Player’s Ball” se dali na tvorbu platinových alb plných výrazných hitů, jejichž komerční úspěch jim vysloužil uznání kritiků.

Andre Benjamin (Dre) a Antwan Patton (Big Boi) navštěvovali stejnou střední školu v atlantském okrsku East Point, kde se díky mnoha slovním přestřelkám začali navzájem respektovat. Založili Outkast a začali spolupracovat s Organized Noize Production, hitmakery co dělali pro TLC či Xscape. Ihned po dokončení školy podepsali smlouvu s labelem LaFace a když nahráli a vydali ”Player’s Ball” viděli, že se vyšplhal až na první příčky rapových hitparád. Na prvním místě vydržel 6 týdnů, stal se zlatým a dal jasný signál k vytvoření celého alba.

Toto album s jednoduchým názvem Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik slavilo úspěch v Top 20 v roce 1994 a do konce roku bylo platinové. Dre a Big Boi také vyhráli Nevětší objev v kategorii rapových skupin v roce 1995 v Source Awards.

Druhé album Outkastu vyšlo v srpnu 1996 s názvem ATLiens : dostalo se na druhé místo a stalo platinovým díky zlatému singlu ”Elevators (Me & You)” (dvanáctý v popu, první v hiphopu), a podobně v Top 40 titulních skladeb. Aquemini (název je kombinací znamení Aquarius a Gemini) následovalo v roce 1998, také se dostalo na 2. příčku a stalo se dvoj-platinové. Nebyly zde žádné obrovské hity-singly, ale kritikové štědře chválili ucelenost alba, zlepšení a velký skok kupředu a zařadili album do mnoha výročních soutěží a hlasování. Naneštěstí, díky bizarní souhře okolností byl Outkast zažalován za titulní singl alba ”Rosa Parks”, samozřejmě nikým jiným než občansko-právní průkopnicí samotnou, která prohlásila, že skupina nepěkně použila její jméno ke komerčnímu zviditelnění vlastní hudby a že jsou ve skladbě příliš hrubá slova. Soud sice žalobu zamítl, ale odvolání trvalo i v době, kdy měla skupina vydat velmi očekávané album, zatím jich poslední, s názvem STANKONIA.

Toto vyšlo 31. října a během jediného týdne za ni Outkast získal zlatou desku. Druhého prosince potom dvojitou platinovou.
